The ocean has a way of humbling us.

The more we learn, the more extraordinary it becomes.

When Julie Siracusa discovered that some brain coral colonies can live for more than 500 years, she couldn't stop thinking about it. Some of these living animals were already thriving beneath the sea when Leonardo da Vinci was painting the Mona Lisa. Even more surprising, coral isn't a plant at all, it's an animal, quietly building the foundation of one of Earth's most important ecosystems.

Resting upon this ancient living architecture is a brilliant blue starfish, a species that plays its own essential role in maintaining the delicate balance of the reef. By helping regulate mussel and sea urchin populations, starfish contribute to the health and resilience of the entire ecosystem.

That remarkable interconnectedness inspired this painting.

The bold simplicity of the starfish contrasts with the intricate patterns of the brain coral beneath it, celebrating the harmony between strength and complexity, youth and age, individuality and community. Together, they tell a story of an ecosystem where every species has a purpose and every life supports another.
