Some stories are simply too good not to imagine.

Julie Siracusa once learned that a group of jellyfish is called a smack. Legend has it the name dates back hundreds of years, when a European nun studying marine life coined the term. Whether she was inspired by observation, or by an unfortunate encounter with a drifting group of jellyfish, is impossible to know. But the story has stayed with Julie ever since.

That sense of curiosity found its way into this painting.

Rather than focusing on a single jellyfish, Jellyfish Number 4 celebrates the quiet beauty of a gathering. Their translucent forms drift together in a slow, graceful rhythm, layered with washes of luminous gold and deep ocean blues. The composition feels suspended between reality and dream, where movement is effortless and time seems to disappear.

Jellyfish have existed for more than 500 million years, surviving countless changes to our planet while remaining remarkably simple. They are both fragile and resilient, mysterious and mesmerizing, a reminder that nature often holds its greatest beauty in forms we barely understand.
